Full alarm system, it’s on where you live!

And on the third day, God’s word echoed down from above: “Let there be audio on O’Malley’s retarded little blog.”

The heavens thundered with consent and a dash of well-intentioned copyright infringement, and it was so.

El-P: “No Kings” [from I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, 2007]

Before you hit play, I will warn you that Travis from Wake Your Daughter Up likened El-P’s sound to “howler monkeys in a garbage can getting beat with a baseball bat,” which is quite apt. The only difference between him and me is that he says it like it’s a bad thing.

This ridiculous banger recently overtook the New Pornographers’ “Stacked Crooked” as the most played song on my iTunes, which is kinda strange because I don’t recall ever thinking “Stacked Crooked” was my favorite song on Twin Cinemas. (That would be “The Bleeding Heart Show,” now that I’m done brutally overplaying “Sing Me Spanish Techno.”) But “No Kings” … this makes sense.

Anyway, “No Kings” is pretty much the epitome of El-P’s vision: A pounding, sky-is-falling beat that shifts and sways; dystopic lyrics about the abandonment of youth; more sonic detail than you can possibly absorb in one sitting (I only this week caught the monkey noises in the first verse, and this record came out in March); and a sweeeeet chorus. That three-note bass punctuation scattered throughout the song is probably my favorite production bit of the year.

Do I sound like a fanboy? Well, it’s only because I am. I can see absolutely no situation where I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead isn’t sitting atop my Top 10 list at the end of the year. I even nicked one of its song titles to name this blog, for crissake.

Also, listening to “No Kings” at brutally high volumes is a quasi-religious experience — which might explain why God granted me audio in the first place.

  1. Haha, good to see that someone reads those blurbs. I actually like “I’ll Sleep When Your Dead”, a lot, which lead me to question everything I ever believed in. But I stand corrected since his shit sounds like Bomb Squad on an acid trip.

Good stuff here…had fun reading it while pretending to work.

  2. Holy crap. I haven’t even told my friends about this thing yet. That was scary…thanks for the kind words though!
